This role is being created through the Government Kickstart scheme. To qualify for the role, you must be aged between 18-24 years old on 1st July and currently unemployed and on Universal Credit – unfortunately we are not able to open this role to 16 and 17 years olds at this time. You will be given a reference number from your DWP work coach to include in your application.

Job Purpose:

We are looking for an individual who is interested in gaining experience in working in the charitable sector to join us for 6 months as a Community Development Assistant to support our work.

Wallsend Children’s Community works with people and organisations in the communities of Wallsend to collectively deliver better outcomes for children and young people. Our vision is by 2030, to build a Wallsend where all local children and young people have access to exactly the same high-quality chances as those in more advantaged areas.

To help us understand our communities ‘Story of Place’, we would like to engage a Kickstart role as part of this pioneering piece of work that supports and underpins the work of the Children’s Community.

Wallsend is identified by its NE28 postcode and hosts four wards – Wallsend, Howdon, Battle Hill and Northumberland – whilst sharing boundaries with two others – Riverside to the south east and Collingwood to the north east covering an area of 4.2 square miles. In this area, there are over 900 individual postcodes, covering over 21,985 residential addresses with a population of circa 44,200 of which circa 11,000 are between the ages of 0 and 19. Mosaic Public Sector has identified 5,263 households that have children present, almost 24% of the total number of addresses.

Whilst ‘Story of Place’ is about the whole of Wallsend, particular focus is given to the wards of Howdon and Wallsend Central, both very different in their demographics, yet both sharing high levels of deprivation.

The role is a really exciting opportunity, working alongside our current community development practitioner to develop skills and competence around community engagement and development work, whilst gaining experience and knowledge in a highly concentrated way to truly understand the lived experience of families, children and young people.

Key Accountabilities:

Shape the work of the Wallsend Children’s Community
Develop a local plan led by the community, for the community to support better outcomes for children and young people
Support and further build the inherent assets of the community – its people
Connect community members in a meaningful way to governance structures that support the system of children and young people’s services and provisions in a locality.

Positive attitude, flexibility, and an interest in learning will be key elements in making the role work, and you’ll also need a willingness to work positively with others from across the organisation.

In return we’ll provide you with training in all aspects of the role, as well as weekly programme of sessions which we’d design for you to help build your wider skills and experience.
